Scientists in the Cancer and Innate Immunity laboratory are interested in the role of the innate immune system in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation, as well as antiviral responses. We are investigating the innate immune response to RNAs, in both viral infections and other disease processes, including inflammation and cancer. We are also looking at the roles of transcription factors such as PLZF and ATF3 as regulators of molecular signalling pathways in the innate immune system, focusing on both antiviral responses and immune mechanisms in cancer. In addition, we are focusing on the effect of pro-inflammatory cell signalling on cancer progression and are developing inhibitory therapeutics to suppress tumour growth. Furthermore, we are studying the roles of small RNAs and microRNAs in innate immune pathways and cancer, and are working towards the development of novel therapies.
– We identified the transcription factor PLZF as a key regulator of the interferon-stimulated antiviral response.
– We discovered that protein kinase R counteracts viral entry into cells by inhibiting gelsolin, a key actin-modifying protein.
– We found that the transcription factor ATF3 suppresses metastasis in bladder cancer, by regulating gelsolin-mediated remodelling of the actin cytoskeleton.
– We showed that PKR represses inflammasome activity to control inflammation.
– We discovered that PLZF curbs inflammation from the inflammasome.
