Hudson Institute fetal physiologist joins prestigious veski STEM program
By Rob Clancy, staff writer
Senior Research Scientist Dr Emily Camm has been named among the latest to join the veski inspiring women STEM sidebyside program – a leadership program empowering women in STEM with the skills, networks and mindset to extend and achieve their career aspirations.
The veski inspiring women STEM sidebyside program in 2023 is exclusively for a cohort of competitively selected mid-career women from across academia, industry, government and the not-for-profit sector, aspiring to secure a senior leadership position.
Dr Camm, who has previously been a Science and Technology Australia STEM Ambassador, believes this opportunity will support her in achieving her career objectives.
“Engaging with the experienced veski mentors and industry experts, and cohort of STEM leaders, will enable me to refine my leadership style, expand my professional network, and further ignite my passion for advocating for gender equality and diversity within the STEM workforce,” she said.
Neurodevelopment – a healthy start
Dr Camm’s career so far has seen her complete a PhD at Monash University before post-doctoral studies overseas, including four years lecturing at Cambridge University. In January 2020, she was recruited to Hudson Institute’s Neurodevelopment and Neuroprotection Research group.
Her research uses a combination of high-resolution respirometry, stereological and molecular biology techniques to advance understanding of the physiology of neurodevelopment from the gene to the systems level.
Dr Camm’s long-term goal is to identify how conditions during early life, such as placental insufficiency or obesity, can program neurodevelopment and increase susceptibility to degenerative diseases later in life.
- The veski inspiring women STEM sidebyside program was established in 2018 with the support of the British Consulate General Melbourne and Monash University, and has since received support from multiple funding and in-kind sources including Victorian Universities, Corporations and membership organisations.
- The six-month program – from July to December 2023, comprising dynamic workshops and networking opportunities – aims to tackle the issue of women’s under-representation at leadership levels across Australia.
