$1 million Fellowship and Award Program to boost rising research stars

Early to mid-career researchers are set to get a boost thanks to the announcement of the $1 million Fielding Fellowship Program and Award for Innovation by Melbourne Businessman and Fielding Foundation Executive Chair, Mr Peter Fielding.
An expansion of the Foundation’s investment in health and innovation, Institute Director Professor Bryan Williams welcomed the investment as a practical step towards the protection of medical science in Australia and addressing domestic and global health challenges.
“This type of investment is critical to the future of Australian medical research. As well as fostering the careers of the Institute’s emerging researchers and their ability to build their research at MIMR-PHI, this funding plays a critical role in addressing funding gaps and uncertainty currently forcing younger scientists offshore,” said Professor Williams.
The program, which is due to commence in 2015 and will run for five years, will see Research Fellowships awarded to emerging and mid-career researchers annually along with the Fielding Award for Innovation.
The Fielding Foundation previously enhanced the Institute’s research capabilities with the purchase of a Hypoxia Suite to enable researchers mimic oxygen concentration levels in the body to grow cells and model natural cellular processes as they progress research to tackle serious disease such as cancer and osteoporosis, as well as understand the impacts of early life on development.
