Bone loss and reduced bone mass are commonly associated with osteoporosis, arthritis and most cancers of the bone. They can leave patients with increased risk of fractures, pain and other serious problems. My research aims to identify the pathways required to build bone and limit bone destruction.

Biography

Associate Professor Frances Milat is a clinician-researcher with expertise in osteoporosis and metabolic disorders. She is Head of the Metabolic Bone Research Group, Hudson Institute, Deputy Head of the Department of Endocrinology, Monash Health and Head of the Metabolic Bone Service, Monash Health.
At Hudson Institute, A/Prof Frances Milat leads a cross-disciplinary research program focused on bone health in chronic disease. She has trained and mentored endocrinologists and clinical researchers in osteoporosis across a spectrum of conditions including neurological disability, haematological disorders, cancer, early menopause, diabetes, renal failure and transplantation. A/Prof Frances Milat’s PhD students have won multiple international and national awards for research excellence.
A/Prof Frances Milat is regularly invited to present her work at osteoporosis and endocrine meetings and has extensive experience in clinical guideline development. She has received multiple awards for clinical and research excellence including the Endocrine Society of Australia Mid-Career Award, the Australia and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society Kaye Ibbertson Award, the Monash Health Senior Medical Staff Role Model Award and the Endocrine Society of Australia Outstanding Clinical Practitioner Award.
